The Cold Chain Upgrade Kit and how to protect product quality from the inside out

Chilled and Extended Shelf Life (ESL) dairy demands stable temperature control from processing all the way through filling and distribution. Our Cold Chain Upgrade Kit is designed to help maintain product temperature during the filling phase on EL4+ lines and has been validated through collaboration with NanFang, China.

Chilled dairy is gaining importance in many markets, and China is a clear example. While the overall liquid dairy category has faced pressure, chilled fresh milk has stood out as a growth segment, driving demand for solutions that protect freshness and quality while supporting wider distribution reach.

For pasteurised and other non‑UHT products, shelf life is closely connected to microbiological growth. The initial microbial load is influenced by raw milk quality and processing parameters, while the speed of microbial growth is strongly determined by storage temperature. In other words: even with the right heat treatment, shelf-life performance depends on how stable the cold chain is throughout processing, filling, storage, and distribution.

That is the thinking behind our newly launched Cold Chain Upgrade Kit. The upgrade is designed to support customers producing chilled and Extended Shelf Life (ESL) products by helping to maintain stable product temperature during filling, which is one of the most temperature‑sensitive moments in the production chain.

In many installations, even small temperature increases during filling can matter. During production runs a filling machine can add approximately 1–1.5°C to the product, which makes upstream temperature control and stability through filling especially important when targeting predictable shelf-life outcomes.

A technical upgrade focused on control, measurement, and stability

The Cold Chain Upgrade Kit is built around an ice‑water circulation concept connected to a jacketed product tank, designed to keep product in the filling machine buffer tank in cool conditions. The system is intended for an in‑house ice‑water supply at approximately 2°C (±1°C) with a maximum of 3 bar pressure, connected at customer interface points.

To ensure the cooling effect is not only present but also controllable, the kit adds additional measurement points and safety monitoring. Temperature sensors are added on the ice‑water inlet, the product tank, and the product pipe inlet from process. A pressure sensor monitors the jacketed ice‑water system, and an overpressure safety valve is included for jacket release at 3.5 bar. Several electrical components are added to the cabinets, supported by a software update to enable monitoring and control of the upgraded functionality.

“The upgrade kit adds a controlled ice‑water loop to the jacketed product tank and introduces additional instrumentation at critical points including temperature sensors on the ice‑water inlet, product tank, and process inlet, plus pressure monitoring of the jacket circuit. Together with the software update, this provides tighter control and improved visibility of product temperature stability through the filling phase.” Says Erik Sebelius, Product Manager for Ecolean filling machines.

What this means commercially: more predictable quality, stronger ESL readiness

Shelf life is never defined by one component alone. Processing choices and full cold chain discipline determine the final outcome. What the Cold Chain Upgrade Kit contributes is a practical improvement where customers can often benefit immediately with more stable temperature conditions during filling, helping reduce variability that may influence quality consistency in chilled and ESL production.

This supports a stronger proposition for producers aiming to grow chilled distribution, reduce spoilage risk linked to temperature variation, and build confidence in premium fresh milk or ESL product strategies.

Alan Zhong, President of Region North Asia sees a great opportunity for both our customers and Ecolean with the new upgrade. “Chilled fresh milk has long‑term growth potential in China. By helping customers leverage their installed aseptic filling base with practical upgrades, we can support expansion into wider distribution and replicate successful chilled strategies with more dairies across the market.”

Collaboration with Chinese customer NanFang

The Cold Chain Upgrade Kit is grounded in real market needs and has been developed in close collaboration across teams and with customers. In China, we worked together with our long-time customer and partner NanFang in a project with the aim to bridge ambient filling capability with chilled dairy ambitions, supporting customer utilisation and growth with limited additional investment.

NanFang’s fresh milk in Ecolean packaging had already been well recognised by local consumers but expanding distribution to lower‑tier markets was constrained by logistics. Through joint work, a chilled product with 21‑day shelf life under the brand Shanhua Plateau Fresh milk was officially launched during early autumn 2025. This milestone demonstrated how processing choices and cold chain control can be strengthened by improved temperature stability and support broader commercial reach for chilled dairy.

Availability and implementation

The Cold Chain Upgrade Kit is available for our EL4+ (400 series) filling lines. Lead time from order to implementation is short and includes on‑site rebuild and verification activities.
